Give a Hoot! Don't Pollute!

As part of Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two year colleges, we are required to do so many hours of community service a year. So yesterday morning me and about 20 other club members donned orange vests and cleaned up our adopted highway - two miles of Salt Point Turnpike in Poughkeepsie/Hyde Park. It was cold in the morning, but we were brave and had work gloves to keep us warm. The black bags made good sun attractors too and by the time we were done, we were plenty warm.

I was amazed at all the trash! All kinds of cup, bottles, car parts, gum wrappers. I don't know who is throwing all this stuff out their car windows because everyone I ask flat out denies it. You think your little wrapper won't amount to much, but a wrapper here, a french fry container there and the the next thing you know, we've filled 8-10 pages per mile of garbage! Please be considerate!

Hopefully I'll be able to update this picture with one of us on the highway soon. Check for updates!

Last night, after a good scrubbing, The Guy, The Girl and I went to The Girl's first big concert. We saw Avril Lavigne at the Meadowlands Arena (or whatever the name of it is now).
She was actually pretty good. She has a strong voice, the crowd
adored her and I will say, she is sure having a good time getting paid to have a major attitude! She is punk and pink! The opening act was Boys Like Girls and boy oh boy, did the girls in the audience like them. There was screaming and shrieking and I would not be surprised to hear that a girl or two fainted with smiles on their faces. Now let me ask you though, because I was not familiar with them, does the name of the band mean that Boys Act Like Girls or that Boys Like Girls? If you know, let me know.

Don't worry. I didn't trade my studies for garbage and live music all weekend! I spent a good part of Saturday doing homework. In fact, I was reading a book about the history of New York rock between acts last night. The Girl thought I was strange, but I have a report/presentation I need to work on. Sometimes every minute counts!
